Americans admit to ignoring their “check engine” light for an average of four months before addressing it, according to new research.

A new survey of 2,000 American car owners revealed that one in five (20%) even admit to putting it off between six and 18 months.

This may be because almost one-third (32%) will wait “as long as possible” before bringing their car in to get serviced.

In fact, another 39% are likely to wait for an incident or for something to break before even considering bringing their car in for service.

The research also revealed that 35% regret putting their car care off — resulting in unexpected repair fees (39%), emotional stress (22%) and even a roadside emergency (21%).

And while the average American feels that preventative car care is important (93%), almost half (48%) said they push back getting their car serviced because of financial constraints.

Conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Pep Boys, the data showed that when it comes to car care, Americans are prioritizing some things over others with exterior light issues (11%), window and windshield cracks (9%) and the radio or sound system (3%) ranking at the bottom of the list.

Americans have had their current car for an average of seven years and 93% own their car, compared to leasing it (7%).

Each year, the average respondent spends more than $400 on car maintenance ($438) and estimates that they’ve spent an astounding $6,272 in total servicing their current car over the years.

To get their car serviced, Americans are most likely to go to a dealership (31%) or a local mechanic (27%) and the majority (62%) do so every three to six months.

In relation to their other responsibilities, 38% of respondents said caring for their car is a “very high” priority.

Despite this, 21% feel like their car is going to break down any day now.

When asked what would cause the most stress if repairs were needed, engine trouble (66%), bad brakes (33%) and fuel system issues (31%) ranked as the top three.

In fact, 26% even admit that their car stresses them out more than their finances or even personal relationships (14%).

Despite these worries, only 32% of respondents wished they lived somewhere a car wasn’t necessary, perhaps because the majority (65%) don’t believe that life would be easier without one — an indicator of just how important they are to our lives.

WHAT CAR REPAIRS STRESS OUT AMERICANS THE MOST?
● Engine - 66%
● Brakes - 33%
● Fuel system - 31%
● Exhaust system - 16%
● Tires - 15%
● AC/heat unit - 15%

Survey methodology:
This random double-opt-in survey of 2,000 American car owners aged 25+ was commissioned by Pep Boys between March 29 and April 8, 2024. It was conducted by market research company OnePoll, whose team members are members of the Market Research Society and have corporate membership to the American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) and the European Society for Opinion and Marketing Research (ESOMAR).

A married man says he became “obsessed” with another woman after meeting her at a course - but his wife has since forgiven him after realising it “wasn’t his fault”.

Ruth Perl, 58, and her husband David, 64, have spent 13 years recovering from the incident.

David never acted on his feelings towards the person he fancied - but he chose to tell the woman after confiding in Ruth.

He started researching an emotional experience known as ‘limerence’ - which means intrusive, romantic thoughts about another person.

David realised his feelings were unwanted - he had no control over them and wasn't interested in beginning an affair with the woman.

After telling Ruth about his realisation, the couple spent time rebuilding their relationship - and say they’re happier than ever.

David, a couples’ therapist from St. Albans, Herts., said: “It wasn’t a normal crush, it was weird and disturbing - but we’ve put in the years to heal ourselves since.

“It was a difficult one - I did end up telling the other person, as I was encouraged to do so through therapy.

“I think she was horrified - in hindsight, it was really unfair to put that on her.

“But it’s all about forgiveness, we’ve done the work and are happier than ever.”

David met the woman he developed feelings for on January 14, 2011 - after chatting to her at a training course.

Their conversation lasted less than 20 minutes, but David could feel he was “besotted” by her - without being able to put a finger on why.

“I’ve had crushes before,” he added. “We both have. But nothing like this - this was really unusual.”

David thought about her, night-and-day, for weeks.

He looked online at forums about “obsessive love” - and came across a post about limerence.

He said: “I thought, 'jeez, this is what I’ve got to a T.'

“Something’s not right - I was absolutely obsessed and I only spoke to her for 20 minutes.

“I kept going over every single word she said to me, every little action.

“The moment I’d wake up, I’d rehearse in my head what I might say to her if she came up to talk to me.

“I’d experience soaring highs if she replied to an email - and extreme lows if she didn’t.

“It was like an intermittent reward.”

Knowing the feeling wasn’t going to go away any time soon, he decided to tell Ruth - who also works as a couples’ therapist.

She said: “David told me, and this was all going on about five days after my dad’s funeral.

“I was in horrific grief at the time, and so my first thoughts were: ‘Oh, for god’s sake. How can you be so bloody stupid?’

“My dad had just died, and my husband wanted to p*ss off into fantasy land.

“We went into freefall, and it was a very, very difficult 12 months.”

After choosing to concentrate on grieving for her dad for a year, Ruth says she “finally had the brain capacity” to sit down with David, and ask him what was going on.

He hadn’t acted on his feelings - and actively decided he wouldn’t “consummate” the crush.

“David reached out to me,” Ruth said. “He asked me, ‘please help me understand what’s going on.’

“He was so confused. I asked him if he still wanted to be married, and he said, ‘I don’t want to throw away what we’ve got.’

“I told him to sit in the confusion, and I’d do what I could to support him.

“But I knew that what will be will be, we might not necessarily make it out of this.”

David said: “We started having marriage counselling - and one thing I want to stress is it isn’t an excuse to cheat.

“I was responsible for what I did - but it did make me realise that often, people don’t set out to have an affair.”

David explored some of the ways therapists encourage people to “heal” from limerence - including starving themselves from contact, or consummating it with the other person.

He settled on going to therapy, and letting the woman know he couldn’t speak to her anymore.

Now, David and Ruth help other couples going through the same thing - and have taught their children, Hannah-Mai, 32, and Isobel, 29, how to value their own relationships.

Ruth said: “It was important our two daughters knew about all this.

“They were older teenagers when this was all going on, and they understood it.

“We thought it was very important for them to understand that all marriages have differences - but you don’t throw the towel in when the going gets tough.

“Even when you’re talking about a full-blown physical affair. Once is a mistake, twice is a habit.”

Join us for a ride on the 2022 Suzuki KingQuad 500 AXi and KingQuad 400 ASi in Arizona’s high desert.

ATV Rider tests the 2022 Suzuki KingQuad 500 AXi and 400 ASi at Alto Pit OHV Park in Prescott, Arizona.

Video: Mark Willaims
Test Rider: Bryce Hendricks
---
We’re in the middle of reviewing the capabilities of a pair of 2022 Suzuki ATVs: The KingQuad 500 AXi SE+ and the KingQuad 400 ASi SE+. We’ve already completed trail testing in Prescott, Arizona at Alto Pit OHV Park, a perfect location with plenty of elevation changes, varying terrain, desert and mountain landscapes and summer temperatures that are far more bearable than the Southern Arizona deserts.

While we’re still taking notes and kicking tires, we thought we’d drop a quick clip of what goes on during a typical ATV Rider trail test. We spared you the pencil pushing and focused on the dirt slinging, which you can see right here.

In the black jersey, that’s ATV Rider’s newest contributing editor Bryce Hendricks at the controls of the KingQuad 500 AXi. Executive Editor Jeff Henson (orange jersey) managed to keep up with Bryce for a few miles on the KingQuad 400 ASi, but old age and a rear swingarm are no match for youth and independent suspension.

Keep and eye out for in-depth reviews of both of these 4x4s soon, right here on ATVRIDER.COM.

This 15th century castle set in the Tuscan countryside has an enduring place in the history of Florence, Italy. And now, for the price of €6 million or about $6.35 million, you could be its new overlord.

The Cavalcanti Castle was constructed around 1427. In the intervening centuries, the castle has undergone numerous expansions and restorations while retaining its architecture and distinctive features. Parapets line the roof of the solid stone structure—once a watchtower—which sits atop a hill covered in mature trees. More recent improvements include carefully planned night lighting and a resort-like swimming pool in the inner garden.

With more than 26,000 square feet of interior space, spanning three floors and a basement, Cavalcanti Castle includes lavish architectural details such as decorative groin-vaulted ceilings, archways and frescoed halls. A soaring beamed ceiling tops the massive dining room, which features a baronial fireplace and central chandelier.

Read the full story:
https://www.forbes.com/sites/forbes-global-properties/2023/02/02/snag-the-top-of-a-towering-20th-century-palace-in-bilbao-spain/?ss=forbesglobalproperties&sh=1b207377450b

Subscribe to FORBES: https://www.youtube.com/user/Forbes?sub_confirmation=1

Fuel your success with Forbes.
