Wearing jewellery is second nature to most of us, it’s something we barely think about. Along with our clothes, hair, make-up, jewellery is an expression of our style, a statement of how we see ourselves in the world.
But unlike – say – a haircut or a new pair of jeans, jewellery reaches to something deeper. Crafted from precious metals and rare stones, our most treasured jewellery is often a token of love, given to mark a significant rite of passage in our lives: an important birthday, a wedding, a promise, an heirloom that links us to someone passed.

We invest the jewellery we love with special powers; these precious metals and stones become such a part of us that we feel lost without them – they seem to become connected to our personal strength and power.

Some might call it superstition, but for Hebden Bridge-based jeweller Toby Cotterill, it’s magic: “I think human beings are capable of magic.” he says, “We can all go beyond what we do in our everyday and get to a different place, and it can help us through hard times. I’m not saying that my jewellery is magic, it’s not me doing it, it’s people putting their emotions and memories and histories into a piece and giving it power.”

Throughout the world and since the beginning of time people have imbued jewellery with talismanic power. The objects we make from precious minerals and stones have been buried with us and long-outlasted skin and bone. Those ancient objects continue to exert an influence and connect us to the stories of people who lived before us.

In his tiny-but-perfectly-formed workshop in Hebden Bridge’s Northlight Studios, Toby sees himself as part of an ancient tradition, using tools and methods that jewellers and metalsmiths have refined and developed over thousands of years.

It’s a magical process to watch. Toby takes gold or silver, melts it, moulds it, cuts and hammers it, drills and files, heats it and plunges it into water, rolls it in sand – completely absorbed, at ease with his tools and lost in the making.

And somehow the metal takes on a new life, becomes something else – a shimmering beetle or fossil-like thing emerges. Something both ancient and alive at the same time, a moving, sparkling, precious thing with weight, something you want to touch…

One of four brothers, Toby’s childhood was spent in the hills and woods of the Welsh countryside: “Dad was a furniture maker, mum was a nurse.” he explains, “We didn’t have much money, but we were very happy. There was a move at the time toward self-sufficiency, so we had a small-holding, a few fields with maybe 20 sheep and a few pigs and cows. Mum and dad between them would work really hard, working the land and bringing us up. I think they wanted us to have that kind of childhood – grubby in the fields, learning the names of animals and plants and trees and just playing outside, making things.”

Farrey (which means ‘chit’) is a refreshing change from the many typical high-school dramas, which are currently flooding streaming services, and often pack in-your-face violence, sex and substance abuse. The movie, an official adaptation of Thai writer-director Nattawut Poonpriya’s acclaimed ‘Bad Genius’, instead throws the spotlight on its academically brilliant protagonist who is drawn into a web of manipulation and greed, before she picks up the art of hustling herself.

The movie introduces debutant Alizeh Agnihotri (Salman Khan’s niece), who may not exude the flamboyance of her star uncle but confidently essays the role of an exceptionally bright teenager who finds herself in a bind. Agnihotri plays the role of the ‘bad genius’ Niyati, who has been brought up in an orphanage by its warden and his wife. After becoming the state topper, Niyati ends up bagging a coveted scholarship that helps her secure a place at a prestigious international school. Her impressive score notwithstanding, Niyati is a misfit in the elite setup where students are driven around in luxury cars. But this genius is blessed with street-smartness and is quick to adapt to its ways.
What starts as an innocuous act of helping a classmate for Niyati, soon grows into a cheating racket during examinations. As more rich students get involved in it, the orphanage starts getting more donations and Niyati has money for her expenses. Soon, another bright but poor student Aakash, who had also bagged the scholarship, is drawn into this racket in spite of his initial resistance. The school-level cheating eventually spirals into an international-level fraud. What works in this ambitious plan-gone-horribly-awry kind of thriller is the taut storytelling that doesn’t lose its focus even as it builds the tension.

The average American spends nearly two and a half hours a day dreamscrolling — looking at dream purchases or things they’d like to one day own — and 71% say it’s time well spent, as the habit motivates them to reach their financial goals.

In a recent poll of 2,000 U.S. adults, more than two in five respondents say they spend more time dreamscrolling when the economy is uncertain (43%). In a year, that amounts to about 873 hours or nearly 36 days spent scrolling.

Conducted by OnePoll on behalf of financial services company Empower, the survey reveals half of respondents say they dreamscroll while on the job, and of those, one in five admit to spending between three and four hours a day multitasking while at work.

Gen Zers spend the most time dreamscrolling at just over three hours per day, while boomers spend the least, clocking in around an hour.

Survey respondents say looking at dream purchases makes it easier for them to be smart with their money (56%), avoid making unplanned purchases or going into debt (30%) and better plan to achieve their financial goals (25%).

Nearly seven in 10 see dreamscrolling as an investment in themselves (69%) and an outlet for them to envision what they want out of life (67%). Four in 10 respondents (42%) say they regularly spend time picturing their ideal retirement — including their retirement age, location and monthly expenses.

Scrolling for the American dream: one in five respondents are looking at homes or apartments (21%), while a quarter look at vacation destinations (25%), beauty or self-care products (23%), and items for their pet (19%).

Others spend time looking at clothing, shoes and accessories (49%); gadgets and technology (30%); and home décor or furniture (29%).

More than half (56%) currently have things left open in tabs and windows or saved in shopping carts that they’d like to purchase or own in the future. For those respondents, they estimate it would cost about $86,593.40 to afford everything they currently have saved.

Almost half of Americans say they are spending more time dreamscrolling now than did in previous years (45%) and 56% plan on buying something on their dream list before this year wraps.

While 65% are optimistic they’ll be able to one day buy everything on their list, nearly one in four say they don’t think they’ll ever be able to afford the majority of items (23%).

More than half (51%) say owning their dream purchases would make them feel more financially secure, and close to half say working with a financial professional would help them reach their goals (47%).

Others feel they have more work to do: 34% say they’ve purchased less things on their dream list than they should at their age, with millennials feeling the most behind (39%).

Top economic factors that may be holding some Americans back include rising prices (54%), inability to save money (29%) and growing debt (21%).

Instead of doom spending, dreamscrolling has had a positive impact on Americans’ money h
