Six in 10 Americans swear they can “get all the exercise they need” without ever stepping foot inside a gym.

A new study of 2,000 U.S. adults found the average person considers themselves active five times per week and exercises four times per week — and 54% said they “never” go to the gym.

Since many skip the gym, they’re getting their exercise in other ways. Almost all respondents surveyed (98%) believe they can get a workout in while taking on everyday tasks.

Those tasks include harnessing the power of everyday activities like walking around the neighborhood (74%), taking the stairs (60%), doing yard work (59%), cleaning the home (59%), walking the dog (56%) and bringing in groceries into the home (42%).

Other tasks compared to exercises include gardening (40%), taking the trash out (36%), stretching after getting out of bed (35%), doing dishes or laundry (33%), standing on your feet for at least four hours (30%) or even getting kids ready for school (10%).

Commissioned by Nature’s Bounty, a vitamin and probiotic brand, and conducted by OnePoll, the study revealed 70% believe they’re healthy and many compared their level of health with different physical activity levels. Embracing these activities as part of a balanced lifestyle could contribute to overall well-being.

Ten percent reported feeling as if they were a superhero or professional athlete, while 17% felt 10 years younger.

Nearly half (48%) of people think back to their previous week’s physical activities during the weekend.

Seventy percent said they feel “impressed” with their activity levels from the previous week.

While more than three-quarters (77%) were reportedly aware of how active their bodies are during the week, 65% said they’d be willing to go further in their activities, exploring their physical capabilities while exercising.

Of them, an overwhelming 80% at least occasionally test their physical limits while exercising. Benefits are then seen as feeling more confident (54%), walking farther (52%) and noticing their body looks better (46%).

Most (87%) imagine they could accomplish tasks they could never do before if they could just improve their physical abilities by 10%.

“It’s encouraging to recognize how everyday activities can feel like feats of strength to so many people and to understand that our bodies have an innate ability to support our overall health and wellness too — the power is already within us,” said Jaclyn Safrath, MS, MPH, medical affairs manager, Nestlé Health Science, maker of Nature’s Bounty. “But it’s clear that many want to constantly improve their health — finding ways to give that extra 10 percent and push what their bodies can do.”

At the core of feeling physically apt, the study found a connection between diet and activity levels. More than a quarter (28%) believe their diet has a major impact on their immune system and 24% similarly believe their diet majorly impacts physical activity levels.

Ninety percent believe their overall digestive health impacts their physicality and immune system.

To improve their digestive health, 63% would likely use a probiotic supplement to support their digestive health.

Three in four would be willing to change their diet for the better if it could improve their physical activity levels. Over half (54%) would change most of or all of what they eat, as a result.

“The human body is a brilliant system and every day it’s hustling on our behalf,” continued Safrath. “Take, for instance, the digestive system where tens of trillions of ‘good’ bacteria already live in the gut supporting so many of the body’s functions including immune health. Probiotics help supplement the body’s own ingenious system.”

TOP 10 EVERYDAY TASK EXERCISES
- Walking around the neighborhood - 74%
- Taking the stairs instead of an elevator or escalator - 60%
- Doing yard work - 59%
- Cleaning the home - 59%
- Taking the dog for a walk - 56%
- Bringing groceries into the home - 42%
- Gardening - 40%
- Taking the trash out - 36%
- Stretching after getting out of bed - 35%
- Doing dishes or laundry - 33%

Survey methodology:
This random double-opt-in survey of 2,000 general population Americans was commissioned by Nature’s Bounty between Feb. 28 and Mar. 4, 2024. The top 30 simple things that make us smile include a kind gesture from a stranger, waking up on a sunny morning – and seeing an elderly couple holding hands.

A study of 2,000 adults found seeing a loved one get good news, receiving a surprise gift and getting a hug also feature on the list.

While others experience the same joy after getting into bed with freshly washed sheets, seeing an old friend and watching a puppy.

But for 46 per cent of people, simply having someone smile at you makes you feel happy, with 65 per cent of adults saying that it improves their mood.

That positive boost lasts for an average of more than 13 minutes, leaving them more likely to be kinder to others (37 per cent), more motivated (19 per cent) or make a bold decision (nine per cent).

Bupa Dental Care [https://www.bupa.co.uk/dental/dental-care] commissioned the research as part of National Smile Month, to highlight the benefits the friendly gesture can have.

However, an experiment saw just 21 per cent of adults return the friendly gesture from a stranger.

During a two-hour period, actress Zara Naeem smiled at 112 different people as they walked past her - with only 24 replying with the same expression.

Psychologist, Jo Hemmings, said: “When we smile, a number of psychological and physiological changes occur that impact both ourselves and those around us.

“Smiling releases endorphins, dopamine and serotonin – hormones which improve our mood and our sense of well-being – and also reduces cortisol, our stress hormone, making us feel less anxious and more relaxed.

“A genuine and spontaneous smile which reaches our eyes – known as the Duchenne smile – can also lower our blood pressure and boost our immune system, by increasing our production of white blood cells.

“Smiles also have a positive effect on those around us, by reinforcing friendship, kindness and social bonding as well as having a contagious effect, creating positivity in those on the receiving end of a smile.”

The research also found the average adult claims to smile at a stranger five times a week – but 16 per cent admit they rarely or never return the gesture.

Of these, a third blame it on simply being lost in their own thoughts and not paying attention to what is happening around them, while 20 per cent put it down to being in a rush.

But 27 per cent avoid smiling at others over fears they will ‘look weird’ and 14 per cent are too embarrassed.

However, when a stranger smiles at them, half of adults feel happy and 32 per cent feel uplifted.

Others feel comforted (11 per cent), ‘warm and fuzzy’ (15 per cent) and confident (11 per cent).

Less than one in 10 felt a negative emotion, such as confused (eight per cent) or sceptical (nine per cent).

Despite this, less than half (48 per cent) always return a smile from a stranger, with 34 per cent of those worried the grin was not meant for them.

While 32 per cent claim to be so surprised by the gesture that they don’t react quick enough.

SUBSCRIBE to Truly: http://bit.ly/Oc61Hj

Brandi and Laz Robinson look like a pretty conventional couple: Laz, 38, works in solar engineering, Brandi, 36, is a stay at home mum who (pre-Covid19) homeschools their three kids and has a penchant for coupon shopping. But behind closed doors they practice domestic discipline, a type of relationship which sees Laz dole out punishments to Brandi, from line writing to spanking. Domestic discipline is where one partner takes on the dominant rule maker (and enforcer) role, while the other partner is the submissive. In the case of the Robinsons, Laz is the ‘head of house’, or HOH, while Brandi is the ‘taken in hand’ or TIH. It also adheres to traditional gender roles with Brandi doing the cooking and housework, while Laz looks after the garden and related manual chores. The pair, from Columbus, Ohio, claim that being in a domestic discipline relationship has made them closer as a couple.

Videographer: Max Rodriguez
Producer: Nathalie Bonney, Ruby Coote, James Thorne, Kim Nguyen
Editor: Beth Angus
