For 150 years now, they have shown up on the first Saturday in May wearing their Sunday best–or better.<br/><br/>Dressing up on Derby Day is a tradition that dates back to the early days of the Run for the Roses. In 1875, when Colonel Merriwether Lewis Clark Jr.—grandson of the famed American explorer—helped found the race, he was inspired by England’s Epsom Derby, which had formal dress codes for spectators, including hats. By the time the Derby was first televised in 1952, fine millinery was as ubiquitous as a fresh mint julep at Churchill Downs.<br/><br/>Today, there is no official dress code at Churchill Downs, although spectators at the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby hardly need reminding that they are as much on parade as the Thoroughbreds in the paddock. Clark’s original fashion policy is just fine with the 150,000 who will attend the first jewel of the Triple Crown. _protestors-daub-manchester-university-in-red-paint.webp "Shocking pictures show Manchester University’s 137-year-old museum daubed with blood-red paint - in the shadow of a pro-Palestine student camp.<br/><br/>The museum, which dates back to 1887, was heavily vandalized across its frontage with vibrant emulsion in the early hours of this morning (Monday).<br/><br/>Photos showed the university's ancient sandstone Queen’s Arch, designed by famed architect Alfred Waterhouse, was also daubed with the distinctive pigment.<br/><br/>No one has yet claimed responsibility for the damage, but Manchester University said it handed over CCTV footage to police who are now investigating the incident.<br/><br/>The defaced building is just opposite a large encampment of Pro-Palestine supporters, who are staging an occupation in solidarity with the war-ravaged nation.<br/><br/>The pro-Palestine demo - which started at uni campuses in the US - have recently sprung up at about a dozen universities across the UK, including Manchester.<br/><br/>Protestors say they're urging the institutions to fully disclose investments, cut academic ties with Israel and divest from businesses linked to Israel.<br/><br/>In November, the uni issued a statement denying it had any involvement with the Israeli defence sector.<br/><br/>A spokesperson said of today's vandalism: “In the early hours of the morning, 13 May, the University and Manchester Museum were subject to an act of criminal vandalism. <br/><br/>“If you are coming on to campus today, you may see that there has been some criminal damage primarily to the Manchester Museum and Queens Arch, with paint sprayed over part of the building early this morning. <br/><br/>“We have CCTV footage of the incident and are working with Greater Manchester Police who are investigating the incident. <br/><br/>\")

There’s even a Chunni babu in his life in the form of bestie Shiva who keeps coming to his rescue and appears to have no life whatsoever of his own. In fact not a single character in the apology of a script — from his college principal to the family to the hospital staff — seems to have any raison d’etre other than pandering needlessly to a man, who, instead of any sympathy or indulgence for his “troubled” mind needs some serious treatment and therapy to control the inherent noxiousness he is spreading in the world around him. The entire arc of the film is to somehow make his negativity attractive, explain it away as “unconventional” and have him find redemption despite his unforgivable ways. Well, he is a genius at everything after all, even at performing surgeries when he is sloshed and coked out.<br/><br/>Having watched and balked at Arjun Reddy for its celebration of a misogynistic, infantile bully of a hero, Kabir Singh felt like a doubly suffocating experience. One that makes you feel violated. Devdas at least had the headstrong Paro and graceful Chandramukhi, two beholden women alright but with personalities of their own, to bring some sense of balance to the man-woman game. Here the woman is denied any agency whatsoever. She is a property, marked and owned by the man. She will meekly follow him wherever he takes her, eyes always down, is masochistic in allowing herself to bear with his violent ways. While the soulful ditty in the background plays “tujhpe hi to mera haq hai (I have the right on you)”. He is the protector and the saviour.")
