There was a time not so long ago when tableware was displayed as the prized possession of households across Britain; fine china used only on special occasions and promised one day to younger relatives proudly adorned dining room cabinets.
More recently, many of those inherited collections have found
themselves forgotten or retired. In the twenty-first century, screen time and throw away culture has eroded the ritual of sitting around a table together at meal times.
In many homes people opt for teas-on-knees while ready-meal packaging and mass-produced supermarket-bought plates have taken the place of the previously treasured dishes.
It's a lack of connection to our tableware that Japanese born potter
Makiko Hastings noticed when she first moved to the UK.
Working from her studio in Knaresborough, she hopes her lovingly
crafted wheel-thrown pieces will encourage a new way of using and
cherishing our crockery.
“One way of looking at pottery is that some people might want to have a collection and treat it like art to look-at, but I want my pottery to be used in daily life,” she explained.
“That’s because the food culture in Japan is quite deep. Table gathering was an important part of my childhood.”
“Over here everything was on the one plate and then quite casually it was just eat and done with - or otherwise people have set tableware and everything is just pristine, and for me that’s kind-of too polite or too posh. It’s not really living life.
“I want my work to be part of daily life so people feel comfortable with it and cherish it.”
Makiko embraces the slow process of pottery.
New collections are never rushed to meet commercial demands - “ideas just come when you’re not trying to think. It just comes when you’re on a bus or walking and then eventually I’ll formulate how I want it.”

A 5ft 10ins woman who towers over her short husband says trolls say he looks like her son but they couldn’t be more in love.

Cassandra Gaspard, 29, and her partner, Westin, 32, are constantly stared at due to their height difference.

Cassandra is five inches taller than Westin - who is 5ft 5ins - and is asked why she is with her husband by strangers.

But the couple couldn’t be happier, after tying the knot last month, and have never seen their height difference as a problem.

Westin, a technical account manager, from New York City, US, said: “In real life people don’t come up to me. They come up to my wife.

“They said ‘how can you be with him? He’s so short.'

“People stare at us – it happens a lot.

“Trolls say I look like her handbag or I’m her son. They are trying to be funny.”

Cassandra, who works in customer care, said: “It’s a little odd that people look at height difference and think we don’t deserve to be in a relationship.

“It’s not the norm – society thinks 6ft men need to be with shorter men.

“You love who you love.”

Casandra had embraced her height by the time she met Westin on Tinder in 2017 – and even wore five inch heels on their first date.

She said: “I grew up taller than everybody. I was the odd ball out.

“I accepted in my 20s that I couldn’t change.

“Now I’m mostly in heels.”

Westin had never had any issues with his height or dating girls taller than him.

He said: “My height is what it is. I can’t stretch myself.

“I always carried myself in a confident way.

“When I met my wife I said ‘you’re tall and there is nothing you can do about it. And I’m small and there is nothing I can do about it’.

“We never cared about it.

“It’s a blessing. If something is up on a shelf and I can’t get it. Guess who I’m calling? My wife.”

Despite their confidence, the couple did have to adjust to the constant stares and comments.

Cassandra said: “I remember the very first time someone said something.

“These two or three older men were looking at us.

“They said ‘she’s really tall, he’s really short – I can’t believe it’.”

Westin says he also gets comments asking if he has 'short man syndrome'.

He said: “Someone said 'I hope he doesn’t have a temper'.

“Short men get a bad rep and they think I have short man syndrome.

“People could be missing out on a life partner because of all these preconceived notions.

“It’s silly stuff like women can’t be with a man shorter than her. They want someone to look up to and protect them.

“I’m a boxer – I can protect my wife.

“It doesn’t have anything to do with my height.”

Cassandra added: “There are tall women married to short men.

“It’s not like OMG I just found a rare coin.”

Westin said: “Love is love no matter what.”
